Impact Subsea has released a new generation of underwater, Flooded Member Detection system: ISFMD V3.

ISFMD V3 provides a highly intuitive underwater flooded member detection system for deployment by divers or remotely operated vehicles.

The system provides capability to test and store results for multiple underwater members at a time. Multiple members can be preconfigured prior to commencing the survey with details of diameter, length and angle. Multiple readings can be logged per member, including at different test positions around the member.

Members are automatically classified as flooded, part flooded or dry, using an advanced digital correlation detection technique. This technique allows acoustic returns to be detected even if the return is below the ambient noise level. This approach to detecting an acoustic return ensures exceptionally high accuracy and reliability in readings.

Commenting on the launch, Ben Grant, Managing Director, Impact Subsea stated: “Having worked closely with users of our original ISFMD system, V3 has been created to provide the ultimate, acoustic based Flooded Member Detection system. The user interface provides a high level of feedback of probe position, acoustic readings and organisation of the complete FMD survey”.

The ISFMD V3 system operates by transmitting an acoustic pulse into an underwater member. If there is a liquid inside the member the pulse will transfer through the member, bouncing off the opposite member wall and back to the probe. If however the member is full of air the signal is attenuated and will not bounce back to the probe.

The use of acoustics to determine the presence of a liquid inside the member is a safer and logistically more simple solution than alternative gamma radiation based Flooded Member Detection systems. Moving away from the traditional analogue detection methods, used in some alternative acoustic based Flooded Member Detection systems, provides a step change in the system performance and reliability.

Users of the original Impact Subsea ISFMD system will benefit from a free upgrade to V3 as part of the company’s commitment to lifelong support of its products.

Full details of the ISFMD V3 system can be found here. A video overview of the new system software can be viewed here.

VideoRay, a global leader in inspection-class ROVs, has selected the Impact Subsea ISFMD Flooded Member Detection system, as an available option for their Mission Specialist Defender series of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).

The Mission Specialist Defender is a robust ROV designed for precise control of the vehicle position and orientation, heavier payloads, and demanding intervention. As such, it has seven thrusters enabling it to move in any direction and maintain an active pitch to face the vehicle upwards or downwards, making it an ideal platform for FMD surveys. It is also capable of several third-party additions, now including the new ISFMD system to serve the oil and gas industry.

The ISFMD system is the first of its kind to utilize digital acoustic detection instead of typical harmful gamma rays to inspect offshore platform members or subsea pipelines for flooding as a result of cracking, damage, corrosion, and/or other defects. The ISFMD is suitable for small ROV deployments as it uses a compact broadband ultrasonic probe paired with an advanced digital signal processing engine to provide the most reliable readings on the market today. The ISFMD uses Impact Subsea’s SeaView software for control, visualization, and data collection.

The ISFMD was supplied and supported by ECHO81, a U.S.-based equipment specialist for marine instrumentation and distributor of Impact Subsea products, to facilitate the successful 30-day trial, where the ISFMD proved it could reliably detect flooded members as large as nine meters in diameter.

“Flooded Member Detection is a key capability for our offshore users,” said Scott Bentley, CEO of VideoRay. “We are proud to have the Impact Subsea system – the acknowledged leader in this field – as a tool on the Defender. It will be a game-changing upgrade for our infrastructure inspection partners.”

Ben Grant, Managing Director of Impact Subsea, commented: “In collaboration with our USA representative, ECHO81, we are delighted to support VideoRay in the provision of the Impact Subsea Flooded Member Detection System. The highly compact and powerful nature of our ISFMD system aligns perfectly with the extremely capable and compact VideoRay ROV. This collaboration enables a very cost-effective method of performing Flooded Member Detection surveys.”

Lisa Brisson, VP of Operations at ECHO81, stated: “The combination of these two great products offer the oil and gas sector a powerful yet compact solution for flooded member and pipeline inspection surveys unlike anything else we’ve ever seen.”

The ISFMD system is now available for purchase as an option to the Defender series ROV systems.

The above press release was jointly issued by VideoRay and ECHO81.

A ground breaking underwater Flooded Member Detection (FMD) system has been launched today by Impact Subsea in collaboration with Unique Group.

The ISFMD offers a significant advancement in flooded member detection, providing a new level of clarity in non-destructive testing for the presence of water in underwater structures.

For use by divers or ROVs, water level, depth of reading, position of the sensor probe and temperature of water are all monitored and recorded. With 1mm accuracy and a range in excess of 100m, the ISFMD system provides an exceptionally high accuracy reading.

An advanced software suite provides a visual indication of all sample points along the underwater member or structure being surveyed. Upon completion of the survey, the software automatically generates a survey report with all recorded readings.

Following collaboration in the development of the system, Unique Group has been appointed as exclusive rental partner for the ISFMD system.

Commenting on the launch of the new system, Andy Doggett, Survey Equipment Divisional Director, Unique Group, stated, “We are delighted to collaborate with Impact Subsea on this exciting new FMD system. Following significant investment in Impact Subsea Altimeters, Depth Sensors and FMD systems we are able to meet customer demand for the latest underwater technology”.

Further details of the FMD system can be found here. To download or lean more about the seaView software application please click here.
