The use of Impact Subsea technology in a non-contact underwater measurement system for hot water drilled ice boreholes has been covered in a recent paper.

Developed and deployed by the British Antarctic Survey, the system is covered in the paper “Non-contact measurement system for hot water drilled ice boreholes”. The paper covers the use of a programmable borehole measurement system. The system was deployed during the ‘Bed Access And Monitoring of Ice Sheet History’ (BEAMISH) project to drill to the bed of the Rutford Ice Stream in West Antarctica.

The hot water drilling BMS operates autonomously after deployment, obtaining non-contact measurements of the borehole diameter as well as the water column pressure, heading and inclination.

This application utilised three of Impact Subsea’s ISA500 Altimeters to obtain high accuracy non-contact measurements of the borehole diameter. An OEM version of the Impact Subsea ISD4000 Depth sensor was used to provide high accuracy depth and pressure readings together with secondary AHRS functions (Heading, Pitch & Roll).

In addition to the above sensor technology, Impact Subsea designed and supplied the housings for the Battery Logger Unit, Hole Measurement Unit and Sideways Looking Cameras used in this project.

Ben Grant, Managing Director, Impact Subsea commented: “We are delighted to see the success of this project and are proud to have assisted the British Antarctic Survey team through the provision of our underwater sensor technology and pressure housing services”

The full paper is available online here.

Impact Subsea is delighted to announce the launch of the ground breaking ISD4000 – a survey grade Depth & Temperature sensor with optional integrated HMRU.

With a 0.01% Full Scale Depth measurement accuracy combined with a Temperature measurement accuracy of 0.01°C the ISD4000 is at the forefront of Depth and Temperature measurement technology.

The ISD4000 can also be supplied with an integrated HMRU. Providing the user with Heading, Pitch and Roll values.

Designed to be a ideal sensor for ROV & AUV underwater applications, the ISD4000 offers a significant degree of capability, in a small form factor, at a very cost effective price.

At only 8cm (3.1”) long, 4.5cm (1.8”) wide and weighing just 0.5kg (1.10lb) in air makes theISD4000 a highly compact unit. This form factor is ideal for applications where space and weight are critical considerations. Using under 40mA of power at 24VDC offers an exceptionally low power consumption from a sensor with such capability – ideal for AUV or battery powered applications.

Housed in a robust titanium housing, complete with industry standard connector, ensures that the ISD4000 is not only at the forefront of technology, but built to withstand the harshest of underwater environments.

The ISD4000 compliments Impact Subsea’s ISA500. Combined, the pair provide the user with Altitude, Depth, Temperature, Heading, Pitch & Roll. All values can be displayed in a single easy to use software interface or output to a third party system.

Ben Grant, Managing Director of Impact Subsea, commented:

‘With the ISD4000 we have created a very capable Depth & Temperature sensor, which compliments the capabilities offered by the Impact Subsea ISA500. Providing Depth, Temperature and with an integrated HMRU makes the ISD4000 one of the most powerful and most compact underwater sensors available today’.
